Solutions to Crazy Dog Lady Problems: Homemade carpet cleaner for Bissel Quick Steamer

I clean my carpets a lot.   They usually stay dirty.   They stay that way because I have three dogs that track in mud every time they come in and out of my house.  There's one particular spot in the doorway between the living room and the kitchen that STAYS muddy.  Oh, I'll get the surface clean but it's still there...  Under the suface, lurking..

I usually shampoo the carpets with my ancient (circa 2002) Bissel Quick Steamer with VERY HOT water, a huge splash of vinegar and some baking soda but last night I put a table spoon of baking soda, a table spoon of Borax, and a splash of vinegar.    The stain is considerably lightened, it's still there, but I'm sick and I didn't much effort into it.

Recipe Form:

  • 1 T Borax
  • 1 T Baking soda
  • 1/2 C White Vingar
  •  3 C HOT water

Mix under the faucet in the tank and use in the cleaner.  As an alternative, mix in a bucket and apply liberally.

Not sure if this would void the warranty on the thing but after it runs out, it doesn't matter does it?
